‘Even after all this time, the sun never says to the Earth: you owe me. Look what happens with a love like that: it lights the whole sky!’ -Hafiz, SUFI mystic
In yoga as well as a variety of cultural traditions, the sun and its winter solstice, when the spark of extended light begins to return to us after our long season of waning darkness, have been revered as sacred symbols to connect us to the life giving force of the sun on our planet, as well as to remind us of our own inner light, inextinguishable deep within despite outward circumstances.
In yoga culture and several others, the number 108 has deep roots and profound meaning on the paths of transformation and soul elevation.
Join Sara Goff on the Winter Solstice for a flowing gratitude and igniting practice, as we offer reverence for the return of this great light above and celebrate the igniting of our own inner light with 108 salutations to the setting sun.
We will share together in 108 salutations from varying yogic traditions with a mindful balance of intention and meaning of our movements in this dynamic flowing meditation. Then with our inner candles aflame, we will welcome the sun and its return toward spring.
Note: This vigorous practice is for students with an understanding of basic alignment and familiarity moving on the breath in traditional sun salutation style. As always, students are encouraged to pace themselves, rest when needed, and be mindful of their own limits as we take on this marathon of 108 salutations.
